Online Marketing Lessons from my Cat

02.07.06

My cat named Guidey (pronounced Guide-E) is around 15 or 16 years old. He’s gotten a little thin lately and gets sick every once and a while, but that’s understandable for a cat his age. I’ve had my fair share of scares when he goes missing, that maybe he crawled somewhere to die, yet he always manages to be okay.

Why am I telling you this?

Well, there’s a valuable lesson here. That’s why!

Everyday before I leave for classes I make sure I say goodbye to him like it’s the last chance I’ll get. He’ll be gone when I least expect it, so I prepare for it everyday.

Translation: Don’t take your site’s earnings or traffic for granted. An algorithm could change, Adsense could go on the fritz, hosting goes down, etc. But don’t take it personally if it does happen either, sometimes there’s just nothing you can do about it.

I also try to take care of him and give him more attention than I did when he was younger.

Translation: Don’t forget about your oldest sites, they’re generally the most important. With the age of sites being factored into search engine rankings, you’re vintage sites may should become more and more reliable over time.

That’s all I’ve got for now, maybe I’ll post some more marketing lessons from my cat on another day!
